Common Materials for Medical CNC Machining

Material selection depends on the component's function, mechanical requirements, environment and customer specifications.

Titanium alloys are widely considered for lightweight components that require high strength and corrosion resistance. Different titanium grades may be selected depending on the application.

Stainless steel, including commonly used medical grades such as 316L, offers good corrosion resistance and mechanical performance. It can be machined into surgical instruments, housings, shafts and other precision components.

PEEK and other engineering plastics can also be CNC machined for applications where low weight, chemical resistance or specific mechanical properties are required.

For a particular project, the material should always be confirmed according to the customer's drawing, specification and intended application.

3-Axis or 5-Axis CNC Machining?

The right machining method depends on the geometry of the part.

3-axis CNC machining can be suitable for relatively straightforward components such as plates, brackets, housings and fixtures. For parts with multiple angled surfaces, curved profiles or features located on several sides, 5-axis machining can reduce setups and provide better tool access.

5-axis machining is particularly useful when maintaining positional relationships between multiple features is important. However, not every medical component needs 5-axis machining. Choosing the appropriate process can help balance quality, lead time and manufacturing cost.

Quality Control for Medical Components

Precision machining is only one part of the manufacturing process. Quality control may include:

  • Dimensional inspection
  • CMM measurement for applicable features
  • Surface roughness inspection
  • Thread and hole inspection
  • Visual inspection
  • Material certificates and traceability documents when required

First article or inspection reports based on customer requirements

Inspection methods should be determined according to the drawing, tolerance requirements and quality agreement.

Choosing the Right Manufacturing Process

CNC machining is not always the only option for a medical component. Depending on the geometry, material and production volume, CNC machining, MIM, forging, casting or other processes may be considered.

If you already have a drawing or 3D CAD model but are unsure which manufacturing process is suitable, you can send it to Jingcheng Precision. Our engineering team can review the part geometry, material, tolerances and production requirements, then discuss a suitable manufacturing method with you before quotation.
