Material Traceability Comes First

Medical components may use materials such as Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy, stainless steel and PEEK, depending on the application.

The material specification needs to match the customer's drawing and requirements. Material certificates and batch information should also be properly maintained so that the material used for a component can be traced throughout production.

This is particularly important for titanium medical components, where material grade, machining conditions and surface requirements all need careful control.

Precision Machining and Inspection

Complex medical components often require tight tolerances, curved surfaces or multiple machining faces.

  • 5-axis CNC machining can provide greater tool access for these geometries and may reduce the number of setups required compared with conventional 3-axis machining.
  • After machining, inspection may include:
  • Dimensional inspection
  • CMM measurement
  • Surface roughness inspection
  • Thread and hole inspection
  • Visual inspection
  • Material certificate verification
  • First article inspection reports

The exact inspection requirements should always be based on the customer's drawings, specifications and quality agreement.

Surface Treatment and Cleaning

Deburring and surface finishing are especially important for medical components. Depending on the material and application, processes such as polishing, passivation, cleaning or other specified treatments may be required.

For components intended for medical applications, cleaning should also be controlled according to the customer's requirements rather than treated as a simple final washing step.

What Should Overseas Buyers Ask a CNC Supplier?

Before placing a medical CNC order, it is useful to confirm:

  • Can the supplier provide material certificates and batch traceability?
  • Can the supplier manufacture the required tolerances?
  • What inspection equipment is available?
  • Can inspection reports be provided with the shipment?
  • Can special surface treatments and cleaning requirements be controlled?
  • Can production records be maintained for repeat orders?
  • A supplier's ability to provide clear documentation is an important part of manufacturing reliability.

Not Sure What Process Your Medical Part Needs?

Medical components do not all require the same manufacturing process.

Depending on the geometry, material, tolerance and production volume, 3-axis CNC, 5-axis CNC, MIM, casting, forging or other processes may be considered.

If you already have a drawing or 3D CAD model but are unsure which process is most suitable, you can send it to Jingcheng Precision for review.

Our engineering team can evaluate the part geometry and manufacturing requirements and discuss a suitable production method with you before quotation.
