Why Use CNC Machining for Aluminum Parts?
Lightweight Components
Aluminum is often considered when reducing component weight is important. It can be used for brackets, housings, mounting plates, structural links, and other parts where the required mechanical properties can be achieved with an appropriate design and material grade.
Flexible Geometry
CNC milling can produce pockets, slots, threaded holes, mounting surfaces, and other features required for mechanical assembly.
For components with multiple angled surfaces or complex geometry, 5-axis machining may provide improved tool access and reduce the number of setups required.
Not every part needs 5-axis machining. Simpler components may be produced more economically with conventional 3-axis machining.
Suitable for Prototypes and Small Batches
CNC machining can manufacture aluminum components directly from digital designs without requiring dedicated injection-molding tooling.
This makes it useful for functional prototypes, pilot production, custom equipment, and low-volume orders.

Which Aluminum Grade Should You Choose?
The appropriate grade depends on the component's load, environment, dimensional requirements, and finishing process.
Aluminum 6061
6061 aluminum is commonly considered for general-purpose machined components, housings, brackets, mounting plates, and structural parts.
It offers a practical balance of machinability, strength, and corrosion resistance for many applications.
Aluminum 7075
7075 aluminum may be considered when higher strength is required relative to many common aluminum alloys.
It can be relevant to selected lightweight structural and mechanical components. However, the final choice should also consider corrosion protection, operating conditions, cost, and the design's actual load requirements.
The material grade should be confirmed before production rather than selected by appearance alone.

Common Applications of CNC Aluminum Parts
Custom CNC machined aluminum components are used in many types of equipment.
Robotics and automation: Robot joint housings, arm links, motor mounts, brackets, frames, and actuator-related components.
Industrial equipment: Machine housings, mounting plates, fixtures, support brackets, and custom mechanical interfaces.
Product development: Enclosures, functional prototypes, internal frames, and customized structural components.
Drone and lightweight equipment: Selected frames, brackets, mounting structures, and other components designed around weight and mechanical requirements.
The suitable manufacturing method depends on the actual component design, functional requirements, and production quantity.

What Tolerances Can CNC Machining Achieve?
There is no single tolerance that applies to every CNC-machined aluminum component.
Achievable tolerances depend on part dimensions, geometry, wall thickness, material behavior, machining strategy, workholding, and inspection methods.
For this reason, engineering drawings should identify critical dimensions and specify tolerances according to functional requirements.
Unnecessarily tight tolerances can increase machining and inspection costs. A practical drawing distinguishes critical mating features from dimensions that do not require the same level of precision.
For components with bearing seats, alignment features, or multiple mounting interfaces, it is particularly important to identify the dimensions that affect assembly.

Surface Finishing for CNC Aluminum Parts
Surface finishing should be selected according to the intended application and appearance.
Common options include:
Anodizing: Often used to improve surface protection and provide a specified appearance.
Bead blasting: Can create a more uniform matte surface when appropriate for the part.
Polishing: Used when a smoother or more reflective surface is required.
As-machined finish: May be suitable when the machining marks are acceptable for the component's function and appearance.
Not every finish is suitable for every alloy or geometry. If dimensions are critical, discuss the finishing process and dimensional allowances with your supplier before machining.

How to Request a Quote for Custom Aluminum Parts
To help your CNC supplier evaluate the project, provide:
A 3D CAD model in STEP or another agreed format.
A 2D drawing with dimensions and tolerances.
The required aluminum grade, such as 6061 or 7075.
Order quantity and expected repeat-order volume.
Surface finish and color requirements, if applicable.
Critical features and inspection requirements.
Required delivery date.
If you are still comparing materials or machining methods, explain the intended application and the most important performance requirements.
